Action Research on the needs of widow-headed households during the pandemic – induced lockdown

MLPC launched a “Need Assessment of Widow – headed households” for relief during the pandemic – induced lockdown. The assessment – focusing on silicosis affected families headed by widows, was carried out in the district of Jodhpur and is being conducted in Bhilwara and Bundi. The objective is to better understand the urgent necessities as well as their long-term needs and tailor interventions to address the same

The COVID – 19 pandemics has proven to be a shockwave across communities. Its economic effect is being and will be felt for over the next 12-18 months. The socio-economic response to the pandemic will be among the most critical components. Among the most marginalised groups are the women who became the sole providers of their families after their miner husbands died of silicosis. In order to inform and tailor the actions to enable them to recover from the crisis, MLPC launched a “Need Assessment of Widow – headed households” for relief during the pandemic – induced lockdown. The assessment – focusing on silicosis affected families headed by widows, was carried out in the district of Jodhpur, which recorded among the highest cases of COVID – 19 and one of the largest mining districts in Rajasthan. Through the study, MLPC was able to gain a better understanding of the implications of the COVID – 19 crisis on the food security and livelihood of the communities, in order to tailor interventions to support these families to maintain their livelihoods.
